Let’s start with the name, because it can be quite confusing. Connective tissue is a collective term for the structures found in and around muscles, tendons, joints, blood vessels, nerves and internal organs. Connective tissue generally has a supportive and nourishing function.
Connective tissue includes bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, subcutaneous connective tissue (fascia), lymph, nerves, fat and blood. So when we talk about connective tissue, we are referring to all of these structures collectively.
Connective tissue, also known as fascia, is an important part of our body and plays a major role in the health and appearance of our skin.
The subcutaneous tissue (subcutis) lies beneath the epidermis and dermis. It is supportive tissue that is found throughout the body in different forms. It helps maintain the shape of our body and provides strength, support and flexibility.
In healthy connective tissue, collagen and elastin work together as a team. The connective tissue needs to be strong enough to absorb and distribute forces, while remaining elastic enough to allow movement.
Elastin can be compared to an elastic band: it stretches and, when healthy, is able to return to its original state. Collagen provides the structure and limits within which the tissue can stretch.
When connective tissue is not functioning optimally, this can contribute to:
Connective tissue has many important functions that contribute to both our health and our appearance.
It contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that binds and retains moisture, helping to maintain volume in the tissues — think of the difference between a raisin and a grape.
Connective tissue also contains blood vessels that support circulation, while the lymphatic system plays an important role in transporting excess fluid and metabolic waste products.
Connective tissue is also essential for wound healing. In addition, collagen, elastic and reticular fibres provide strength, elasticity, structure and volume.
It certainly deserves some extra attention!
Many of the nutrients needed to support healthy fascia and connective tissue can be obtained through a balanced, nutritious diet.
Supplements may sometimes be useful to complement your intake of certain nutrients. Vitamin C and magnesium can generally be obtained sufficiently through food, although supplementation may be appropriate in some cases. Folate and vitamin B12 may also require additional attention, particularly if you consume few or no animal products.
For personalised advice, it is best to consult your doctor. Blood tests can help identify specific vitamin or mineral deficiencies and determine what your body may need.
Fascia contains a significant amount of water, making hydration an important part of maintaining healthy connective tissue.
Drinking enough water is especially important after exercise, when you need to replace fluids lost through sweating.
After a treatment, staying well hydrated is also recommended. Good hydration supports normal circulation and lymphatic function, helping your body process and transport metabolic waste products effectively.
Water is an essential part of supporting healthy connective tissue.
The flexibility and mobility of connective tissue can decrease when we move too little or repeatedly place the same demands on our body.
Fascia consists of layers of connective tissue that are able to glide and move in different directions. Regular movement helps maintain this mobility.
Almost any form of movement can help keep your body flexible. However, it is important to consider the physical demands of your daily life.
If you have already been physically active throughout the day, a gentle form of movement such as Pilates may be sufficient. If you have a sedentary lifestyle or spend long periods sitting, incorporating more regular movement and exercise can be particularly beneficial.
Relaxation is important for your body, yet rest and sleep are often underestimated.
Chronic stress and insufficient sleep can affect cortisol levels and may influence many processes within the body when sustained over a longer period.
Stress can have many different causes, including work-related factors. Where possible, identify and reduce sources of ongoing stress and seek professional support if needed.
Massage can help improve mobility, circulation and relaxation. Connective tissue techniques are designed to work with the superficial and deeper layers of the tissue and may help improve tissue mobility and reduce areas of tension and restriction.
This type of treatment can sometimes feel intense or uncomfortable because it is a deeper and more stimulating technique.
There are several techniques that can be used to work with connective tissue, including cupping and fascia tools.
The aim is always to support better movement, mobility and overall wellbeing.
Connective tissue massage, developed in 1929 by German physiotherapist Elisabeth Dicke, focuses on the connective tissue layers between the skin and muscles.
The treatment is designed to stimulate circulation, support the condition of the skin and encourage metabolic activity within the tissues. When performed correctly by a trained professional, it may be used to support concerns such as fine lines, cellulite and a dull-looking complexion.
One of The Body Solution’s specialities is connective tissue massage, using specialised massage techniques combined with cupping to stimulate circulation within the skin and underlying tissues.
Connective tissue has many important functions that contribute to our health and appearance. It contains hyaluronic acid, which binds moisture and helps maintain tissue volume. It also contains collagen, elastic and reticular fibres, which contribute to firmness, elasticity and structure.
It definitely deserves some extra attention.
Connective tissue massage may help to:
Visible results may be noticed after only a few treatments, although results vary from person to person.
One of The Body Solution’s specialities is treating the appearance of cellulite.
But how does cellulite develop?
As we age, and due to a combination of different factors, changes can occur in the connective tissue, circulation and the way fluid is distributed within the tissues.
When circulation and fluid balance are affected, excess fluid can accumulate in the tissue. This can contribute to increased pressure within the surrounding tissues and may further affect circulation and oxygen supply.
Changes in the connective tissue can lead to areas becoming tighter, less flexible and more fibrous. These structures can pull on the skin from underneath, creating the characteristic dimpling known as the “orange peel” appearance.
This can contribute to a cycle in which changes in tissue structure and circulation reinforce one another.
Connective tissue massage, when performed correctly and by a trained professional, can be used as part of a treatment approach for the appearance of cellulite.
The massage stimulates circulation and may support the movement of excess fluid within the tissues. Working on areas of tight or less mobile connective tissue can also help improve tissue mobility and flexibility.
Research has indicated that massage-based treatments can influence the appearance and structure of cellulite. One of the most important factors in achieving and maintaining results is consistency — repeated treatments tend to provide better results than a single session.
Individual results vary depending on the person, the condition of the tissue and lifestyle factors.
The lymphatic system transports lymph fluid throughout the body. Lymphatic vessels help return excess fluid to the circulation and transport substances from the tissues.
The lymphatic system has two important roles:
Removal and transport of waste products
Lymphatic vessels transport fluid and substances from the tissues, while lymph nodes filter lymph and play an important role in immune function.
Immune defence
Lymph nodes contain immune cells, including lymphocytes, which help the body respond to infections such as viruses and bacteria.
Connective tissue massage may support circulation and lymphatic movement and can help reduce the feeling of fluid retention or heaviness in the tissues.
A connective tissue massage may be considered as part of a preparation routine before certain aesthetic treatments such as Botox or fillers.
However, massage should not be performed directly after Botox or filler injections. As a precaution, connective tissue massage should be avoided for at least two weeks after Botox or filler treatment, unless your medical practitioner advises otherwise.
After this period, treatment can generally be resumed, provided there are no other contraindications.
Always follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by your doctor or aesthetic practitioner.
Some practitioners recommend connective tissue massage as part of pre-operative preparation before a facelift. However, any massage before surgery should only be undertaken after consultation and approval from your surgeon.
There are several contraindications for connective tissue massage. If you have one or more of the following conditions, treatment may not be appropriate:
Treatment should also be postponed in the following situations:
If you are unsure whether a treatment is suitable for you, please consult your doctor or healthcare professional before booking.
Connective tissue massage is an intensive treatment and is generally most effective when performed as a course of treatments.
For facial connective tissue massage, we generally recommend an average of 5 treatments, once a week.
For cellulite, an average of 8–10 treatments, once or twice a week, is generally recommended for optimal results, depending on your individual goals and the condition of the tissue.
After completing a course, maintenance treatments are recommended every 4–6 weeks, depending on your individual needs and desired results.
For body treatments, we will assess your skin and connective tissue during your first appointment and advise you on the number and frequency of treatments most suitable for you.
A sports massage is a specialised massage designed to support the muscles before or after physical activity. It helps reduce muscle soreness, prevent injuries and promote faster recovery. Through targeted pressure, kneading techniques and mobilisation, muscle tension and tight knots are addressed, leaving the body feeling more relaxed, flexible and energised.
Sports massage is ideal for anyone who is physically active, from recreational athletes to professional athletes. It can also be beneficial for people with physically demanding jobs or those who regularly experience muscle tension and stiffness.
A sports massage is therefore not just a moment of relaxation, but an investment in your physical performance, recovery and overall health.
